Event Description
Due to the tremendous success of the first ugly stick workshop that took place at Open Space, 510 Fort Street, earlier in June, Ingrid Mary Percy has been invited to host the workshop once again at the TD Art Gallery Paint-In on July 19. This workshop is part of The Travelling Republic exhibition at Open Space, on until July 26, which features works by Colette Urban, Gerri Lynn Mackey, and Ingrid Mary Percy. Ugly sticks made during the workshop will be featured in the Open Space gallery as part of The Travelling Republic exhibition.
The ugly stick is a traditional Newfoundland folk instrument made of a four-foot-long mop handle with a boot at one end and a cymbal at the top. Adorned with bottle caps, small bells, and other noise makers, it is played by hitting it with a smaller stick while stomping it on the ground. If you have any bottle caps, small bells, and other brightly coloured materials to decorate your ugly stick, be sure to bring them along! Children and families welcome.
