From the director who brought 'The Drowsy Chaperone' to the Langham Court Theatre stage...
“There was a cabaret...and it was the end of the world and I was dancing with Sally Bowles - and we were both fast asleep.”
'Cabaret' is a musical based on the Christopher Isherwood novella 'Goodbye to Berlin', and the Druten play 'I am a Camera'. The show is set in a nightclub in 1930’s Berlin just as the Nazi party begins to rise to power. An aspiring writer named Cliff Bradshaw has traveled to Berlin in search of inspiration when he happens upon Sally Bowles at a cabaret called the Kit Kat Klub. She ends up moving in with him in a boarding house run by Fräulein Schneider and her suitor, Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit-shop owner. As the Nazis grow stronger, everything is thrown into disarray.
The second Broadway revival (the first was the 1987 revival starring Joel Grey) was based on the 1993 Mendes-Donmar Warehouse production under the artistic direction of Sam Mendes, who is known for his dark re-inventions of musicals. The production opened in March of 1998 at the Kit Kat Klub (originally named the Henry Miller’s Theatre and currently named the Stephen Sondheim Theatre). Later that year it transferred to Studio 54, where it remained for the rest of its 2,377-performance run, becoming the third longest-running revival in Broadway musical history starring Alan Cumming as the Emcee, opposite Natasha Richardson as Sally. The Broadway production won a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.
