Event Description

Via Choralis chamber choir and orchestra conducted by Nicholas Fairbank, and soloists Anna Shill (soprano), Adam Dyjach (tenor) & Paul Winkelmans (bass).

The Creation (German: Die Schöpfung), written between 1796 and 1798, is considered by many to be Haydn’s masterpiece. The oratorio depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the biblical Book of Genesis and in Milton’s Paradise Lost. Scored for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and a symphonic orchestra, it is structured in three parts. The orchestra often plays alone, notably in episodes of tone painting: the appearance of the sun, the elements, the creation of the animals, and above all in the overture, the famous depiction of Chaos before the creation.

Via Choralis, now in its 14th year, has augmented its numbers to about 50 singers in order to balance with the 32-piece orchestra. The soloists for these performances are all advanced voice students from the University of Victoria and the University of Manitoba. Anna Shill (soprano) depicts the angel Gabriel in Parts 1 and 2, and in Part 3 sings the role of Eve, while tenor Adam Dyjach sings the role of the angel Uriel. Paul Winkelmans (bass) is the angel Raphael in the first two sections and in Part 3 takes the role of Adam.

Artistic Director Nicholas Fairbank divides his time between teaching, performing, composing, conducting and adjudicating. He is currently on the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, is Artistic Director of the Viva Youth Choirs and an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre. This season he was also a Guest Conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Victoria. As well as earning Associateship diplomas in organ performance from the Royal Conservatory and the RCCO, Mr. Fairbank has Masters degrees in music and French from the University of Paris, the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Victoria. His works have been performed across Canada, the USA, Mexico and in Europe.
