Event Description

Catch the holiday spirit as Tidings brings together Christmas favourites with songs from the year-round canon. Share a night of music that’s uniquely fun and passionate, just like the artist bringing her voice, guitar and piano to the stage, Allison Crowe.

Celebrate with fun, thrills, and soul-stirring song on Saturday, December 7 – a concert to warm a Winter’s night & aid Artemis Place, (girls’ educational and life skills), and HepCBC. Music for the season… and all time.

Victoria Tidings' very special guest artist is Billie Woods - http://www.facebook.com/billiewoodsmusic - whose style is rooted in Canada's Pacific Northwest and infused with the warmth and vitality of cultural rhythms of Brazil. She cites classical guitarist Jose Gonzales and Mexico’s Rodrigo y Gabriela among her inspirations. From home-base in “Canada’s banana belt” she’s blended a life of passions - principally music and photography. Now 30, Billie Woods has been playing guitar since age 12. Super-simpatico, Billie Woods is a popular tour partner of Allison Crowe since 2005 - as support artist and concert, travel photographer. She performs songs from her debut album/CD, "Only So Far", along with a batch of songs still to be recorded.

Along with musical comfort and joy, Tidings aims to raise awareness and funds for its event partners - hard-working Victoria non-profit groups - Artemis Place Society and HepCBC:

Artemis - http://www.artemisplace.org + http://www.facebook.com/ArtemisPlace - takes its name from the Greek goddess of the hunt who served to protect young women – and, for decades, it’s been providing an holistic, compassionate, and nurturing community where girls can enjoy success, develop resiliency, and receive help with social/emotional issues while continuing schooling. Artemis also has a child care centre that gives a nurturing start to the infants and toddlers of young mothers, models care-giving skills, and supports each mom in her parenting. Artemis' Place for Girls Secondary School and its Young Parent Program are currently in two separate locations and the society’s goal now is to find a new location and combine the programs under one roof. Lisa Ellis, Executive Director, and her team at Artemis Place are committed to tapping the potential of the most at-risk girls in our community and helping them to transform their lives via “Compassion, Power, Respect”. (Along with info and videos on Artemis’ home-site – YouTube offers: “Artemis Place Heart Work Movie” @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvuiMYSrbYw ; and “The Artemis Effect: When Girls Talk Back” @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZziNvgkidM )

HepCBC - http://hepcbc.ca + http://www.facebook.com/pages/HepCBC/274985724940 - provides support to those living with Hepatitis C Virus. Worldwide, it’s estimated 150 million or more people have chronic Hepatitis C – and in Canada, 8 out 1000, some 245,000 people in total - and approximately 20-25% of those infected don’t know it yet. When rock musician Lou Reed died recently from liver failure, after a long battle with Hep C, a spate of international news stories brought discussion of HCV to the fore. Victoria-based HepCBC has been dedicated to this mission since 1996. It assists: through a support group, phone support, website, & pamphlets - for HCV+ individuals undergoing recent diagnosis, treatment, liver transplant, chronic or advanced HCV; those who want to discuss upcoming treatment, alternative treatments incl. diet, supplements, exercise. HepCBC is also here to support family, friends, caregivers. And the society offers education/prevention services through its lending library, prison & community outreach – including anti-stigma, awareness and prevention activities such as parades, health fairs, and marathon groups. HepCBC’s primarily-volunteer group also cooperates with medical and pharmaceutical professionals, plus Canadian and intl. HCV groups.

Hear what folks are saying:

“The third time was the charm for Newfoundland-based, B.C.-born singer-songwriter Allison Crowe. After film director Zack Snyder tried to get one of Crowe's songs into the 2009 film ‘Watchmen’ and again in 2011 with ‘Sucker Punch,’ he finally succeeded this year. The film is the summer blockbuster ‘Man Of Steel’ and features Crowe in a cameo role .” ~ Jason MacNeil, Huffington Post

"After a surprise cameo in the summer blockbuster movie Man of Steel and the release of her exquisite traditional folk covers album, ‘Newfoundland Vinyl’, Allison quickly rushed back into the studio to write, record, engineer, produce and create the cover art for her upcoming album, ‘Heavy Graces’... it seems our favorite independent singer-songwriter is more determined than ever to forge her own path. I predict we’ll be seeing Allison Crowe not once but twice on our best of the year list." ~ Victoria McCabe, Muruch

"Allison Crowe is a stunningly talented performer. Her voice celebrates the music with a bluesy rock-gospel intensity; her controlled vibrato, silken rasp, and powerful projection rivet your attention. This is no casual background music... be prepared to be amazed." ~ Carol Swanson, ChristmasReviews.com

“Amidst her long list of accomplishments - you can add Big Screen Star. Just this past summer Allison Crowe took on the familiar role of a singer in Zack Snyder's Superman blockbuster MAN OF STEEL (2013). Allison's cameo has her performing the Johnny Cash classic ‘Ring of Fire’." ~ Stephanie Beaumont, Sea and Be Scene

"Allison Crowe's voice is as much a manifestation of Christmas spirit today as Bing Crosby's was in 1942. It's as warm as an open fire; as gorgeous as snow-frosted evergreens; as tender as that hug you give your mother on Christmas day." ~ Stephen Smysnuik, The Pique
