Event Description
Buster Williams, one of the truly great bassists in the history of jazz, is a prolific artist whose playing knows no limits. His big earthy sound anchored several of the early 70`s recordings by Herbie Hancock and Joe Farell. He has also played, recorded and collaborated with jazz giants such as Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Count Basie, Nancy Wilson, Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan to name just a few.
Buster has been able to flourish through many periods of changing fashions in jazz, making him one of the most valuable sidemen for the past 30 years. His soulful bass is heard on countless movie soundtracks, television shows and commercials. Through his diverse career, he has been the recipient of prestigious awards including a Grammy in 1979 and in 1991 he earned a National Endowment of the Arts grant in order to create and perform his original compositions for quintet, string ensemble and vocal chorus.
In 1990 Buster decided to step up to the front, play his music, and express his concept of a cohesive musical unit, thus the inception of his quartet “Something More”. Twenty years after his vision for “Something More” became reality, the quartet is still touring today. They have achieved countless engagements across the United States and Europe, including the first International Jazz Festival in Moscow and a tour of Japan and Australia. Even now, Buster Williams sees his music as a journey towards perfection.
His own stellar quartet “Something More” draws from a small pool of top musicians who love to play with Buster. For this very special performance in Victoria at Hermann`s Jazz Club with “Something More” he will be joined by Mark Gross saxophone, Patrice Rushen piano and Ndugu Chanceler drums.
