Brand New! is a paper-based work that references disposable letter banners, strung up for various one-time celebratory occasions such as birthdays or grand openings. Each letter of this banner was created by exposing construction paper to sunlight through a stencil; the unprotected areas fade quickly under the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Hung against the window at the Ministry of Casual Living, this piece delivers on its promise of obsolescence as the words disappear over time. A cluster of helium balloons in the space would supplement the installation. Their eventual deflation would result in a complementary scene of abandonment and neglect.
