Event Description
Sunday, May 6th:
*** Old Time Machine started as the art-show contribution of a bluesman and a bedroom-musician. The duo works to blend Ryan McNally’s studies of finger style traditional blues with Kyle Cashen’s experience crafting ethereal soundscapes to create familiar but distinctly original music. Their work started when Ryan put forward a handful of songs departing from his solo writing. Kyle eagerly filled spaces with reverb- soaked vocals and backbeats. With a handful of songs and a mountain of stringed instruments, analog machines and effects, drums, and mics, between them, McNally and Cashen began combining traditional sounding folk structures with ghostly harmonies and vintage electronics. The band strikes a balance between references to the early days of pop and rock music, dreamy textures, and even elements of hip-hop. Old Time Machine finds a way to embrace their influences while sounding unmistakably new.

*** David Newberry sings folk music with rock sensibilities. Or is it the other way around? His increasingly noisy songs provide insights into the complex contemporary social world.
His 2010 CD, "When We Learn The Things We Need To Learn", established him as a legitimate force in Canadian music, catching the eye of several of Canada's roots-elite, including Juno winner David Francey, who calls him "absolutely brilliant...," and EXCLAIM! Magazine, who pegged him way back then as "an artist to watch," more recently upgrading him to "evidence that Canadian roots music is in good hands."
In 2011, after featuring at several British Columbia Festivals (ArtsWells/Campbell Bay/Dundarave/CBC Toque Sessions), Newberry found himself on a small island with a large crowd, eventually returning home to Vancouver with his sophomore effort "No One Will Remember You," produced by Adam Iredale of Fish and Bird, and featuring members of the Deep Dark Woods, The Gruff, O'Mally, DRMHLLR, and more. The record sets a contemporary experimental rock vibe against a backdrop that is firmly rooted in timeless roots music. The record was released in March 2012 on Vancouver's Northern Electric Label.

*** Old Cabin is singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jona Barr. Raised along the shores of Lake Superior and in the wilderness of rural Yukon, Jona is a second-generation musician who began his career learning from noteworthy country-folk artists, blues musicians, and classic rock bands. The influence of those campfire days can be heard in the whimsical lyrics and solid instrumentals of Old Cabin’s repertoire, which ranges from songs of eloquent melancholy to upbeat sing-a-longs and dance floor foot stompers. Known for his finely honed musical craftsmanship, Jona sings and plays guitar, lap steel, harmonica, and is accompanied by drums, voices, guitars with bows, piano and bass for Old Cabin. Fans know to expect the unexpected when it comes to his unique arrangement of percussion and strings.
