The Milk Carton Kids are Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, a harmonizing duo who use two guitars and two voices to create a new combination of classic folk and sophisticated back-porch Americana. “This is the best new acoustic singer songwriter duo I've heard in years.” It's Gillian Welch meets Samuel Beam with a little early Simon & Garfunkel thrown in. Totally classic, Totally original” -Oliver Swain. And Oliver is not the only one impressed by this group. Since forming in February 2011 The Milk Carton Kids have been making big waves across the North America and have just released their second CD 'Prologue'
“A sweetly dazzling variation on close-harmony vocals, part Simon and Garfunkel and part Everly Brothers, with occasional acoustic prestidigitation.” – The New York Times

FolkWest Artistic Director Oliver Swain saw about 100 artists at the 24th international Folk Alliance Conference this February in Memphis Tennessee. Of all those dozens of talented performers it was a young duo from California that left the most lasting impression. Formed in February 2011, The Milk Carton Kids have already released two albums – the live album “Retrospect” and the studio full-length “Prologue.” In addition to all traditional physical and digital retail outlets, The Milk Carton Kids make both albums available for free download, no strings attached, direct-to-fans via their website, resulting in more than 80,000 downloads and counting. The band has played more than 150 shows including a 35-date tour with Joe Purdy as his opening act and backing band, sold out headlining shows across the U.S. including Largo in the band’s hometown of Los Angeles and Joe’s Pub in New York, and critically acclaimed performances at The Americana Music Conference, The Folk Alliance Conference and SXSW. The duo’s recent appearance at SXSW garnered best of picks from The New York Times, NPR, and Time Magazine. Additional praise has ranged far and wide from supporters such as American Songwriter, No Depression, WXPN, KCRW, WFUV, Daytrotter and more. The band recently announced a string of upcoming headline dates as well as dates with Dar Williams (listed below). This week NPR’s World Café features an interview and performance with The Milk Carton Kids.
As the momentum behind The Milk Carton Kids continues to build, Pattengale and Ryan remain committed to their shared vision – two voices and two guitars.
