Event Description
Elektra's 25th Anniversary Season closes in grand style with a multi-choir finale that brings our three guest choirs and Elektra together. Each ensemble will sing a few pieces on its own before all 150 voices join together for an exhilarating set of five massed choir selections.
Michael Haydn's Laudate Pueri Dominum, Joan Szymko's The Peace of Wild Things, Stephen Hatfield's Ya, Faraoule, and a traditional spiritual, Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down, arranged by Americans Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory will give the audience a listening experience ranging from the delicate to the roof-raising, the fruit of four days of intensive rehearsals by the combined choirs under the direction of all five conductors.
One of the massed choir selections will be the world premiere of a suite by Honorary Patron Bramwell Tovey, conducted by Morna Edmundson. The massed choir will be joined by Vancouver's A Touch of Brass quintet and organist Stephen Smith for Songs of Envious Time. This suite on 17th century English poetry by Davenant, Herrick, and Crawshaw explores the subject of intimate connections and fleeting time - between lovers and would-be lovers, and between a husband and wife.
