Montreal artist, Chris Velan, does not fit the typical singer-songwriter mold. A musician and songwriter his whole life, he studied law and passed the bar only to leave that path to travel to West Africa where he helped make a documentary film about a group of refugee musicians from Sierra Leone. He returned to release his debut solo album in 2003, thus beginning a musical exploration of his own influences that ranged from folk, pop and rock to world music and reggae. Motivated by a range of influences spanning 70s’ singer-songwriters, blues, rock, 80s alternative, West African music and reggae, Velan continues his goal to carve out his own path, directly inspired by the loneliness, searching, exhilaration and exhaustion of a nomadic musical lifestyle. Velan's new album Fables For Fighters was released in April 2011 and produced by the renowned Iestyn Polson. Chris’ music is born of duality. He sings of things big and small, of darkness and beauty, love and destruction, and of the struggle for personal fulfillment against the doubts that so often hold us back.
