Event Description
Pelageya is an extraordinary band which plays folk music in a rock style. As well as the name of the energetic vocalist, Pelageya is a band led by Pavel Deshura who has helped to create a unique approach to the Russian tradition. The band are a real antidote to the rather pop based format in which Russian folk is generally presented. The band need to be seen to fully appreciate the excitement they generate.
Pelageya has an impressive string of admirers. Among them are prominent political leaders, such President Jacques Chirac of France, who described Pelageya as "the Russian Edith Piaf"
Her other admirers include such big names as the Serbian film director and musician Emir Kusturitsa and the Spanish tenor Jose Carreras. Pelageya took part in the recording of an album of the popular British band "Depeche Mode".
"Russian folk songs go well with folk tunes from other countries and even with non-folk elements - from "Pink Floyd", for one, or the music from "Fifth Element". It's really fascinating" - the singer says.
For many Russians the young singer has now become a symbol of their country. And this no wonder, since her art is saturated with driving energy, flattering sincerity and purely Russian soulfulness.
