Vancouver International Flamenco Festival: 20th Anniversary Celebration
As part of the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival’s 20th anniversary celebration, you are invited to attend a performance and lecture demonstration by Flamenco Rosario, with Victor Kolstee and guest gypsy singer from Spain, Manuel Tane.
Flamenco Rosario is marking the 20th year since Artistic Director, Rosario Ancer and Music Director, Victor Kolstee, began teaching and performing in Vancouver and created the first Vancouver Flamenco Festival. Since then, they have established their school of Flamenco arts Centro Flamenco and their Flamenco company, Flamenco Rosario. They also formed a non-profit society, Rosario Ancer Flamenco Arts Society, to help support performances and the development of Flamenco in Vancouver.
Mexican born, Spanish trained Rosario Ancer launched her dance career in Spain when she joined Ballet Espanol Antonio del Castillo, followed by stints with Tablao Flamenco Arco de Cuchilleros in Madrid and the Paco Mundo and Maria Velasquez Dance Company. In 1989, she moved to Canada, establishing Centro Flamenco, the annual Vancouver Flamenco Festival and Flamenco Rosario. She has received choreography awards from the Canada Arts Council and the B.C. Council for the Arts, and a YWCA nomination for the Women of Distinction Award for Arts and Culture. As a teacher, the Mother of Flamenco Vancouver heads up Centro Flamenco. With her work, Rosario strives to honour her teachers and mentors: Rosario Zambrano, Ciro and Maria Magdelena.
Victor Kolstee studied with a number of outstanding guitarists, most notably Diego and Paco del Gastor, Justo de Badajuz and Victor Monje ‘Serranito’. In 1979, he moved to Spain where he met Rosario Ancer. They married and joined El Ballet Espanol Maria Velasquez y Paco Mundo. Victor performed regularly in the Café de Silverio in Madrid, Penas flamencas, private fiestas, Spanish radio and television and with Lolo de Cadiz and ‘Los Brindis’.
