Event Description
The Audacity of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto
Johann Sebastian Bach’s popular image as a supreme musical craftsman sometimes obscures just how audacious he could be. In this lecture preceding the Academy of Ancient Music’s Vancouver performance of the six Brandenburg Concertos, professor Alex Fisher of the UBC School of Music will discuss how Bach revolutionized the concerto by exploiting unusual, even bizarre instrumental colours and techniques.
Alex Fisher is Associate Professor of Music at the University of British Columbia. Having trained in trombone performance and in historical musicology, he teaches courses on Renaissance and Baroque music and is a research specialist in music and religion in Reformation Europe.
