KRISTIA DI GREGERIO
Kristia Di Gregorio's (pronounced: kris TEE ahh DEE greg oreo) brand of smoky cool vocals and jazz based folk noir is quickly bringing her to the forefront of the Vancouver music scene. Her passionate vocal stylings and come hither whispers conjure up images of sultry nightclub singers and torch-song balladeers, but her all-original repertoire of velvety vocals blended with moody, acoustic instrumentation is anything but your predictable jazz standard.
Di Gregorio made her stage debut at age eleven, and by eighteen she was already an accomplished performer willing to take big risks for her career. She raised more than a few eyebrows when she invested her university savings into recording her first CD, Songs for the Fallen under the name Kristia Jeanne Sheffield, a haunting collection that showcased her impressive songwriting talents. The gamble soon paid off with critical acclaim that likened Di Gregorio to Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, as well as a video for the song Through the Cracks put into rotation on MuchMusic. When she found traditional methods of breaking into radio ineffective, Kristia took another big chance and brought her guitar to the lobby of Vancouver's CFOX for an impromptu performance. Again, the risk paid off with an on-air interview and live performance that very day.
It was soon clear that Kristia's business savvy was as sharp and inspired as her music. By the age of twenty she had already created her own record company, Crimson Records, and had crisscrossed the country on numerous tours. In 1997 she became the president and founding member of PAIRA (Pacific Alliance of Independent Recording Artists), and that same year Kristia hosted the webcast series Close to the Fridge. She has appeared at numerous festivals and theatres, performed on television and radio, and her music has appeared in feature films.
Di Gregorio is now back in the studio recording her new album, Variations on a Scheme. She continues to push the boundaries of traditional jazz and blues for a sound that is at once dynamic and subtle, flirtatious and coy, sexy and demure, proving once again that this kitten has claws. Backed by a dedicated ensemble of seasoned musicians, Kristia's live show seduces the audience with her craft as a songstress "leaving the listener yearning for more, and no one else"(Warren Footz, See Magazine).
"She sings of love lost, love unfilled and broken heartsleaving the listener yearning for more of her, and no one else."
