Event Description
Callanish Society, Chor Leoni and Christ Church Cathedral invite you to sit in the spacious beauty of Vancouver’s recently renovated and acoustically-rejuvenated cathedral for an afternoon of sacred song, choral pieces and poetry that reflect on themes of lightness and dark – in the seasons – and in our lives.
CHIAROSCURO (Italian for light/dark) will be presented on Saturday October 27, at 3 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral.
Callanish Society provides healing retreats for people with cancer. Proceeds from this concert will provide support for the work of Callanish and Christ Church Cathedral.
Autumn brings with it shorter days and longer nights and a heightened awareness of our personal relationship to the light and the darkness in our lives. Some of us grieve the passing of summer and others look forward to the quiet of dark winter days. Just as seasons come and go in our outer world, seasons of light and darkness come and go in the inner landscape of our heart and soul. In the midst of summer we might enter the ‘dark night of the soul’ triggered by some personal illness or loss, or in the thick of winter we may feel a surprising “lightness of being”. Janie Brown, executive director of Callanish says, “whatever our inner or outer experience is, at times, there is a desire to stop in the midst of the experience and enter fully into it. That’s what we want this concert to be.”
CHIAROSCURO features performances by: Maryliz Smith, of Callanish, composer, and organist who will premiere songs from her David Whyte Poetry Song Cycle. Cathedral Music Director Rupert Lang offers an excerpt from his stunning Magnificat and some choral pieces with the Cathedral choir. Diane Loomer and Chor Leoni will perform works from their Healing Voices CD and Meghan Black, 29 year old, 3-time cancer survivor will offer reflections on her journey through the Light and Darkness and the potential for healing that comes from entering fully into all the seasons of one’s life.
