Even if you don’t know her name, you’ve probably heard a Patty Griffin song. The Dixie Chicks, Linda Ronstadt, Bette Midler, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Jessica Simpson, Emmylou Harris and Kelly Clarkson have all had the good taste to cover at least one of the songerwriter’s tunes (the Chicks have covered three—“Truth No. 2”, “Top of the World”, and “Let Him Fly”). But the Maine-raised Patty is also a singer, recording artist and live performer with an accomplished solo career dating back to her acoustic debut Living with Ghosts. More impressive was her follow-up, Flaming Red, which proved Patty could rock ‘n’ roll as well as touch the heart. Dave Matthews’ ATO Records picked up the singer following the release of her third album, Silver Bell, and has released Patty’s four subsequent albums, including the Grammy-nominated 2002 effort 1,000 Kisses. Her most recent disc, Children Running Through, debuted at #37 on the Billboard Album Chart with 27,000 copies sold. Tastemaker Cameron Crowe has also seen the light, and placed Patty’s song “Long Ride Home” on the soundtrack to his film Elizabethtown. Patty’s new tour follows the release of “Up to the Mountain”, a single by Kelly Clarkson and Jeff Beck that the two performed on the “Idol Gives Back” episode of American Idol.
