Traditional Gamelan music features interlocking melodies that create a shimmering and often haunting soundscape.
Featuring Javanese artist Sutrisno Hartana with Vancouver composer/performers Michael O’Neill, Andrew Czink, Mark Parlett, Ben Rogalsky and Kenneth Newby and the 12-member Madu Sari ensemble.

Gamelan Workshop for Musicians
Monday, June 4 - Friday, June 8. 6:30pm – 9:30pm.
Javanese master musician Sutrisno Hartana and Gamelan Madu Sari composer-performer Mark Parlett offer Victoria musicians the opportunity to learn about Javanese music and practice in a 5-day immersive workshop at Open Space. Musicians will be invited to practice the gamelan instruments in traditional gamelan music forms, and to explore cross-cultural collaboration using the unique ideas of rhythm, melody, and ensemble that the Javanese style has to offer. Workshop participants will be exposed to all of the gamelan’s instruments and vocal practice. Sutrisno and Mark will also discuss and demonstrate gamelan musical, theatrical and dance forms, and demonstrate the impact these forms can have on cross cultural collaboration and contemporary art making.
This workshop will be fascinating for adventurous musicians and composers of any style, sound artists, singers, and anyone with a basic music background.
