STUART ROSS is a Toronto fiction writer, poet, editor, and creative-writing instructor. He has been active in the Toronto literary scene since the mid-1970s. He sold 7,000 copies of his self-published poetry and fiction chapbooks in the streets of Toronto during the �80s.
He has edited a bunch of literary magazines: Mondo Hunkamooga, Who Torched Rancho Diablo?, Dwarf Puppets on Parade, and, most recently, Peter O�Toole. Stuart is co-founder, with Nicholas Power, of the Toronto Small Press Book Fair, an underground literary institution since 1987. A prolific writer, performer, editor, and teacher, he has given readings at hundreds of venues in Canada, the U.S., England, and Nicaragua. He has appeared widely at festivals, including the Ottawa International Writers� Festival, the Ashkenaz Festival of Yiddish Culture, MayWorks, Words in Whitby, the Vancouver Jewish Book Fair, and the Toronto Mini-Festival of Sound Poetry.
Stuart�s work has appeared in scores of journals here and in the U.S., including Harper�s, This Magazine, Geist, Rampike, Canadian Forum, WHAT!, Industrial Sabotage, Perpetual Motion Machine, and Bomb Threat Checklist. His poetry collections from ECW Press include The Inspiration Cha-Cha (1996), Farmer Gloomy�s New Hybrid (1999), which was shortlisted for the 2000 Trillium Book Award, and Razovsky at Peace (2001). In spring 2003, ECW published Hey, Crumbling Balcony! Poems New & Selected. Stuart�s fiction includes The Mud Game (a collaborative novel with Gary Barwin; The Mercury Press, 1995) and Henry Kafka and Other Stories (The Mercury Press, 1997).
Since 2002, Stuart has taught a poetry workshop for adults at Centauri Summer Arts Retreat. He has also led several editing workshops, and has taught poetry-writing at the elementary and high-school levels. He was the 2002 Writer in Residence for the Writers� Circle of Durham Region.
�In Canada, he's perhaps most famous for taking Jean Chr�tien's babbling press conference speech -- after the PM gave a Shawinigan handshake to that irate protester back in 1996 -- and turning it into a "found" poem (one that was published around the world, often without properly crediting Ross). Louise Bak was born in Kingston, Ontario and has lived in Toronto since 1991. She works actively as a writer, editor, radio broadcaster, performance artist and sexuality counsellor. Her writing has appeared in numerous magazines, journals and anthologies in North America. Her first book of poetry, emeighty, was published in a limited edition by Letters Bookshop in 1995. She is currently the guest art editor of the feminist culture magazine PlusZero. Aside from her literary (in)ventures, Louise can be heard every Tuesday morning as co-host of Sex City, Toronto's only morning program dedicated to ongoing cultural (s)excavation (CIUT-FM 89.5). Her performance work has appeared recently in the independent films Cheese (1995), Amidst Us (Total Eclipse Productions, 1996) and The Wall (1997). She is co-originator of SLANT, Canada's first television magazine to explore Canadian-Asian art and culture, now in development. She is also completing her graduate work on the transperformative aspects of Cantonese opera in Canada at the University of Toronto.
