One of the most acclaimed guitar bands of the last decade, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club returns with Baby 81. An ambitious, powerful, guitar-driven rock ’n’ roll record, the disc the San Francisco trio back to its origins. Sonically, it’s a far cry from Howl, the 2005 disc that took the band’s trademark heavy, hallucinatory sound down a rootsy, acoustic road.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club began in the mid-’90s. For two albums—their 2001 self-titled debut and 2003’s Take Them On, On Your Own—BRMC became known for its psychedelic fuzz-rock, a mixture of droning vocals, athletic bass lines, and bluesy guitars. During an August 2004 European festival tour, tensions and excesses tore the three apart, and drummer Nick Jago walked away. Baby 81 disc reunites the three original members, including guitarists Robert Levon Been and Peter Hayes, for a driving rock ’n ’roll road trip that maintains Howl’s folky core. A chunky riff launches opener “Took Out a Loan”, and a massive, Led Zeppelin-style beat propels “666 Conducer”. “Weapon of Choice” is an anthemic first single. Most impressively, the album somehow ties in all 3 of their previous efforts, while still managing to take the band forward. Ultimately, Baby 81 captures Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the most crucial time of their career.
