Though heavily influenced by the U.K. punk scene, Manu Chao is today one of the most recognized names in world music. His albums with Radio Bemba Sound System replicate the sounds of street music and bar scenes from a variety of cultures—Chao was born and raised in Paris and his first band was a rockabilly unit, but he would spend several years traveling through South and Central America, and recording new music as he went. The Latin American influences are apparent on Manu’s first album with the multi-cultural Radio Bemba Sound System, 1998’s Clandestino, which gained the group a large following back in France with hits like “Bongo Bong” and the title track. The album earned the Best World Music Abum in 1999’s Victoires de la Musique Awards. The records that followed, including Proxima Estacion: Esperanza (featuring a heavier Cuban influence) and the ecstatic live disc Radio Bemba Sound System, along with the band’s brilliant concerts, further established Manu Chao as one of the best world music acts on the international scene. North American appearances have been rare as Chao has concentrated on Europe and Latin America, but in 2006 he played a headlining set at Lollapalooza and another in Brooklyn before a sweaty, jubilant crowd.
