The original lineup of The Long Winters included Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla and Harvey Danger’s Sean Nelson. But the Seattle band has always been a showcase for John Roderick’s painfully beautiful and catchy songs. Under the The Long Winters moniker, and with a various lineups, Roderick has recorded three full-length albums and the EP Ultimatum for the respected Portland-based label Barsuk. The band has opened on tours with such superstars of indie-rock as the Pernice Brothers and the Decemberists, as well as the Britpop act Keane. The latest The Long Winters disc, Putting the Days to Bed, combines the lyrical intimacy and melodic complexity of Ultimatum with the guitar rave-ups of the earlier records, The Worst You Can Do is Harm and When I Pretend to Fall. Rolling Stone chose the song “Pushover” as one of the best of 2006, saying, “Guitar troubadour surrenders to his girlfriend with two and a half minutes of rootsy sweetness, and you can’t help but surrender too.” Last year, The Long Winters contributed a cover of “Pet Name” for the Bar/None They Might Be Giants tribute album Hello Radio. And DorsiaFilms is currently in production on Through With Love, a documentary about the group, and the ups and downs of its talented frontman.
