Sarah Slean’s 2004 album, Day One, was an artistic and commercial breakthrough. Her most mature, sophisticated and melodic work to date, Day One confirmed what her steady base of fans already knew—that the waifish Toronto singer/songwriter/piano player is one of the most unique entertainers in the country, and one of those rare talents able to whisk the listener into a world of her own making.
An artist whose creativity extends to visual art as well, Sarah has received numerous awards (Eye and Now magazine’s Best Musician and Best Female Vocalist, respectively) and nominations (two Junos, for Best New Artist and Best Adult Alternative). She has provided backup vocals for NQ Arbuckle and Hawksley Workman (who produced her album Night Bugs), and played on Pilate’s 2006 album Set Control for Life’s Speed and K-Os’s 2005 Joyful Rebellion. Orphan Music, Sarah’s latest, is a live and studio recording (partially recorded at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre) that captures the beauty and essence of her solo live show—soaring vocals accompanied by grand piano and a string quartet on songs that are personal yet universal, quirky yet accessible, alien yet familiar. Experience the magic that is Sarah Slean, an artist whose potential is just starting to be understood.
