Cinematic Orchestra
Few crews have the compositional depth or live performance chops of Londons Cinematic Orchestra. The brainchild of Ninja Tune graduate Jason Swinscoe, this sextet of jazz-based sonic adventurers create lushly dark ambient nujazz that has an almost suitelike structure despite referencing everything from free jazz and hip-hop to techno and even R&B. By composing their own samples, which then form the basis for their jams, the songs have an organic quality. Basically, Orchestra is designed to be a live band, not just pre-recorded samples being passed off as spontaneous creativity. These visionary artists, Jason Swinscoe samples, Phil France bass, Tom Chant saxophone, Luke Flowers drums, Patrick Carpenter turntables and electronics, John Ellis keys, are able to recreate in concert the specific moods of the songs from their much-lauded albums such as Every Day. A sumptuous melange of atmospheric jazzy rhythms, dance music circuitry, and live performance muscle. - Lotus Magazine
