Iain Ballamy Food
Possibly most famous as a Loose Tubes alumnus, English saxophonist and composer Iain Ballamy is a gifted and versatile musician. After having worked with such jazz luminaries as Gil Evans and Dewey Redman, Ballamy had a chance encounter with three of Norways best musicians; the result was several ground-breaking CDs and the quartet named Food. Their sound combines austere ECM-ish soundscapes out of which emerge abstracted electronics and spacious horn meditations. The emphasis is on sound and texture over melody, but this exploratory music is also wryly beautiful, inventive, and rewardingly accessible. Food consists of Arve Henrikson trumpet/vocals, Mats Eilertsen bass, and Thomas Stronen percussion. Ballamy, as always, plays with wit and invention. - Sunday Times
