autorickshaw
Canada ’s musical multiculturalism has reached a new peak with autorickshaw, a Torontobased worldbeat quartet of virtuosos who combine Vedic chanting, funkified interpretations of South Indian classical music, Bollywood-flavoured jazz standards, and smoking hot Indo -jazz originals. Although it ’s very hard to pull off this
kind of hip, east-meets-west sound, the effectiveness of autorickshaw’s fiery fusion can be credited to its sophisticated and diversely educated musicians. Vocalist-percussionist Suba Sankaran has studied every type of singing from jazz and Indian to Renaissance; percussionist Debashis Sinha is a renowned traditional music icon who specializes in Arabic, Greek and Turkish drumming; electric bassist Rich Brown has played with the likes of Bruce Cockburn and steel pan drummer Andy Narrell; and tabla expert Ed Hanley has performed around the world in a 14-year career. autorickshaw’s album ‘Four Higher’ was nominated for a 2005 JUNO Award for “World Music Album of the Year”.
“Sexy and immensely talented, autorickshaw will be leaving listeners speechless for years to come. ”
