About

Patrick Jacobson

Imagine if your life had a soundtrack, just like in the movies. Every challenge, every danger, every thrill; all perfectly captured in rhythm and melody. All of your actions and emotions painted in song. For Patrick Jacobson, it’s not a hard thought to grasp. From his first organ lesson at age 3 to his most recent recording sessions, Patrick’s entire life has been a musical.

Growing up in Delta, British Columbia proved to be the perfect starting point for Patrick. His elementary school had a band program and he jumped on board as early as he could. Shortly afterwards, he enrolled in piano lessons. The option of playing chords and melodies at the same time proved to be a rewarding experience for him and he continued working at it for five years. However, the guitar proved to be a much more natural instrument for Patrick. With the guitar he had the ability to bring his instrument along with him everywhere he went. As a result, he found himself in environments that were much more inspiring than the living room where his piano stood. This led to a song-writing frenzy and allowed Patrick to start expressing himself through his own music. It didn’t take long before he was playing in bands and performing all over Vancouver.

Realizing that there was often a higher demand for bassists than guitarists, Patrick soon discovered another hidden talent of his. His keen sense of rhythm quickly transformed him into a very proficient bass player. “I bought myself a bass guitar and joined a band,” Patrick recalls, “They needed a bass player and I wanted to try something new. I had never played bass in a band before.” That year he performed twenty-eight shows as the bassist for SixBlockRadius. The following year, he toured BC and the Yukon as the bassist for the Victoria band, iRiS. “I like the power of the bass,” he explains. “A good rhythm section is the driving force behind any band.”

In 2002, with the aid of FACTOR’s “Professional Demo Award”, Jacobson has completed a four-song demo at Mesh Studios in Burnaby, British Columbia. After feeling let down by the demise of various band projects, Patrick decided to take control himself. Not only did he write all of the material, he also sang, played guitar, played bass, and even co-produced it. He hired Jeff Schultz to engineer the album and enlisted the talents of drummer, Daniel Adair (3 Doors Down), and lead-guitarist, Robert Watt, to play on the project. “It was an amazing experience,” he recalls, “I had some extremely talented musicians working with me in the studio and I was very pleased with the results.” The demo, released under the band moniker ‘Casey & Finnegan’, became the ground work for a new band; The Capitals.

The demo quickly proved its worth by attracting the attention of producer, Kevin Kane (The Grapes of Wrath). In 2004, The Capitals entered the confines of Profile Studios to record their debut album. Two weeks later, Patrick Jacobson, Andrew Fuller, Jonathan Bonikowsky and Robert Watt emerged with ten new songs and handed them to Steven Drake (Odds) for mixing at Greenhouse Studios. The debut album by The Capitals will be released in late 2004.

When asked about his own music, Patrick replies, “It’s rare that I pick up an album and feel really inspired by it these days. But, occasionally it does happen and I’ll want to listen to it until I’ve worn holes in the disc. I want to make an album like that.” Don’t be surprised if Patrick Jacobson’s songs become part of your life’s soundtrack.
