Monophonics
Whether you call it “psychedelic soul” or “black rock,” that amazing sub-genre of soul from the late ‘60s and into the ‘70s was crucial in the development of funk. Well, everything old is new again, and San Francisco’s sublime Monophonics have reinvented that soul-stirring tradition with a fiery musicality that has created an international buzz. Formed in 2005 as an instrumental quintet, the
addition of vocals kicked the Monophonics up a few notches: aside from now playing alongside stars like the Budos Band and Dr. Lonnie Smith, this delightfully rowdy music machine has become an annual attraction at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. With a third album named In Your Brain just out and a full touring schedule, this hard-hitting sextet are one
of the most incendiary party bands on the circuit. The musicians are Ian McDonald guitar, Myles O’Mahony bass, Alex Baky saxophone, Ryan Scott trumpet, Austin Bohlman drums, and Kelly Finnigan vocals/keyboards.
