Alex Pangman
This Toronto-based jazz chanteuse has built up an amazing fan base by exploring the songs and ballads of the early and classic jazz era. Sometimes referred to as “Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing,” Pangman is a wonderfully gifted stylist with an uncanny affinity for all those melodic, lushly romantic songs that were written decades before she was even born. Despite suffering from a respiratory disease that ultimately necessitated a double lung transplant, Pangman is singing better than ever, and can be heard to particularly good effect on Live in Montreal and her latest, 33, which has just been released on Justin Time Records. Sophisticated, passionate and talented, Pangman has no equal at giving nostalgia a very good name indeed. Her band includes Drew Jurecka violin/saxophone, Peter Hill piano, Chris Banks double bass and Glenn Anderson drums.
“Pangman’s sometimes sassy, sometimes mournful crooning is deftly bolstered by bright horn flourishes, saloon-worthy piano breaks and Djangly guitar solos.” –NOW Magazine
