Avant-garde post-minimalist alt-country
Michael Cloud Duguay is a musician, producer, and sound artist based in Peterborough, Ontario. He first gained recognition as a versatile and charismatic musician in the early 2000’s Canadian indie rock community and has contributed to dozens of critically acclaimed recording and performance projects as a producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist. After surviving nearly a decade of homelessness and drug addiction, Michael returned to his artistic practice in 2018, quickly transcending, while never abandoning, his background in more conventional folk and rock settings to establish himself a central figure in contemporary Canadian creative music.
Recent undertakings have included free jazz ensembles, site-specific audio installations, longform minimalist composition, and the development of sustainable recording practices. Michael’s work as a producer focuses on immersive site-specific ensemble recording, field recording, radical DIY collaborative practices, sustainable production technology, the synthesis of pop structures and free/improvisational performance techniques, non-hierarchical community-building, and the recording process as a document of lived communal experience.
His work has been recognized by The Canada Council For The Arts, The Ontario Arts Council, The Yukon Sound Commission, The City of Peterborough, The Electric City Culture Council, The City of Kingston and The Kingston Arts Council, and he has been awarded multiple artist residencies including the inaugural City of Kingston Artist in Residence in 2021, a Westben composer residency, and projects in Northern Iceland and Finland. He has recorded music in the Yukon Territory’s northernmost fly-in community and in the lantern room of mainland Canada’s easternmost lighthouse. Michael is currently the musical director of Scions, a critically-acclaimed creative music collective with members from across Canada, and regularly performs as an accompanist with Canadian luminaries including Steven Lambke, Carson McHone. Jose Contreras, Quinton Barnes, New Hermitage, Joyful Joyful, Fittonia, Sing Leaf, and more.
