Christina Southern May 1, 2018
Christina Southern aka “Chrissy Steele” spent her early years singing in more of the classical and folk vein. She participated in several choirs and operas in her hometown of Comox and later in Victoria. At the age of 19, she moved to Vancouver to become a professional singer, but found she was too inexperienced to front a band. Returning to Victoria, she answered an ad in the paper looking for a female rock singer she joined her first band
Room Service. After cutting her teeth in the Victoria rock bars she accepted a gig playing with the hard rock band
Reform School, the band gave her a good foundation to hone her skills as a front person playing clubs in B.C and Alberta with several bands . In late 1989, she was asked to join
The Headpins and along with original member Brian MacLeod on guitar and drummer Bernie Aubin, they did two tours and started to record. But tragedy struck the rock world when MacLeod was diagnosed with cancer. It was decided the album, already in the works, should be released as
The Chrissy Steele Band debut solo album and would be called “Magnet To Steele”.
Despite his medical condition, MacLeod still managed to put his indelible mark on it playing all guitars and bass, background vocals, and producing the album. He shared engineering and programming duties with Matteo Caratazollo and Tim Feehan before his passing. Chrissy signed with Chrysalis Records/EMI in the U.S.during 1991 and in 1992, received a Juno nomination as “Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year” and the album “Magnet To Steele” also received a nomination for “Rock Album of The Year”. Today you'll find Chrissy busy in the studio, making music with friends and working on a new project for release later this year.
