Gene Hardy October 1, 2016
Gene Hardy is a nationally recognized performer, teacher & clinician who was born and raised in Victoria. A graduate of Spectrum Community School, he after studies at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and UVic, moved to Toronto in 1986 but still maintains a residence in Victoria. It was at Pagliacci’s that a 14-year old Hardy (and his 13-year-old friend, pianist Miles Black) were given their first professional opportunities.
He performs on saxophone, violin, theramin & musical saw. His broad experience includes over 20 years as a leader & a side-man touring the USA, Canada & Europe, over 20 years as an instructor & clincian, and has been a contributing editor to “Canadian Musican's” Woodwind column since 1993. Gene has also served as technical advisor/special skills tutor to television & theatre actors for roles involving performance on brass, woodwind & string instruments.
Gene has worked in hundreds of groups in many different settings: dance bands, orchestras, theatre pits, a cruise ship (it actually sank), big bands, film & tv soundtracks, jazz combos, jingles, showbands, numerous recording studios and chamber groups playing a diverse assortment of styles including: jazz, soul, swing, burlesque, heavy metal, funk, folk, blues, hip hop, reggae, gospel, rock, rap, experimental, classical and country.
He has performed & recorded with literally hundreds of groups including: Barenaked Ladies, Big Sugar, Colin James, The Lincolns, Ronnie Hawkins, Dutch Mason, Michael Kaeshammer,, Michael Buble, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, and Downchild Blues Band to name a few and was nominated as “Horn Player Of The Year” at The 2001 and 2003 Maple Blues Awards.
