I have many many questions about bands from British Columbia and I am hoping someone out there can help me.

I used to run a music mag in high school back in the late 80's - early 90's and I was blown away by how much talent not only B.C. had but Canada as a whole.

During that time I lovingly collected music, many artists of which were Canadian. I stopped for a while but now I am back into collecting full time and I enjoy much of what I hear. Here are my questions:

1. Is there anyone who was around or behind-the-scenes of a project that was called "Water Street Warehouse". It took place in 1985 in Gastown, British Columbia. It was hosted by a young Sook Yin Lee (then of Bob's Your Uncle) and featured local bands Second Language, Red Herring and The Shape. The project was directed by Julian Longsworth. Also involved was a younger Barry McKillican. Water Street Warehouse was a warehouse located on Water Street in Gastown and was the practice studio for many local acts.

2. Does anyone know of the 45' single "Hollywood" released sometime in the late 70's-early 80's by a band called Foxfire. I picked this up in a record shop but lost it some years ago. Where can I get this song again? The band's lead vocalist was a female with long blond hair.

3. I am trying to find out the name of the artist (or band) from Vancouver in the 1980's who performed the song "Dancin' To the Radio". They actually made a music video on this song. Partial lyrics are:

Makes you move, makes you groove, makes you hot for the dial

Other lyrics:

....?....keep awake cause it's driving you wild

Dancin' to the Radio
Dancin' to the rhythm of a midnight show
Dancin' to the radio
Come on everybody get your feet on the floor

Anyways, that is all I have. Earmarked for this video was the name "J.Long".

4. Who is the band, or at least the singer, in the video on this web site called "Say What You Will"? It took place at Oly's in Victoria, B.C. in 1984. Can anyone tell me his name or at least if he has ever released a song on vinyl?

That is all the questions I have for now. Thank you in advance for any response you may give. - Mon, 30 Jul 2007 7:21pm

Try contacting Red Robinson through his website. He and his staff are a virtual encyclopedia of music in B.C. as well and all of North America.

P.S. I did some graphics for Waterstreet through a guy named Kelly Crowe, who was a club and lounge pianist in the Vancouver circuit, but I don't remember anyone else from that particular bunch.

Here's some answers to your questions:

#2 Here's a link to Foxfire
http://pnwbands.com/foxfire.html

#3 The band was Steele, McLeod & Prisioner. Members included Brian McLeod, David Steele, Bernie Aubin and Danny Latham. Yes I have some of their recordings.

#4 The singer in the Oly's Jam video from 1984 is Russ Dunaway who lives in Vancouver. More than likely there are recordings of Russ somewhere.

Good luck on your search Islandborn and thank you Killer K as always.

Thanks guys, you answered all of my questions.

Now I just have to find that FoxFire song once again and look for any music released by the two other groups.

The first question was just to get in touch with someone involved in the project so I could find out if the special show called "Water Street Warehouse" was ever aired on local cable. To my knowledge I own the master tape of this program (along with a number of great vids on B.C. bands). Watching a inexperienced Sook Yin and some early Vancouver band performances is a delight. All three of the listed bands played songs, one from each of them became favs of mine.

The people who were behind this vid were part of a film studio/school which made Bob's Your Uncle first video "Talk To the Birds" and "Dancin' To the Radio" by Steele, MacLeod & Prisoner.

I bought their old 1980's master tape library roughly 12 years ago (must have been 4-6 large boxes) and it wasn't until 3 years later that I actually went through them. Not until this year did I finally transfer some of the best stuff to DVD.

P.S. If I can find it, I may have something to contribute to the site. I have a video I took of the Dayglo Abortions prepping for their gig at the 94th Street Music Hall. They were playing that night with Pigment Vehicle from Victoria and Blasphemy from Vancouver. - Tue, 31 Jul 2007 8:02pm Edited: Tue, 31 Jul 2007 8:31pm
