A Seven Inch Mixdown - Myelin Sheaths, Cosmetics, La Corde, The Orpheans
A Seven Inch Mixdown by Rene Milord:
First up is an Albertan band called MYELIN SHEATHS with a disjointed, noisy, poppy, post-punk EP. It’s kind of sloppy, perhaps better live? Hozac Records 047 (at Pat’s Pub, May 6)
Next up is a local duo known as COSMETICS who are like a dead ringer for Siouxsie with a dash of Cabaret Voltaire. “Soft Skin” b/w “Black Leather Gloves” are both dripping with atmosphere with beautiful minimal synth work. Nice graphics too! Captured Tracks 040 (Show soon?)
Next is LA CORDE from San Fran with a “Back in Salem”/”Urban Burqua” platter. Theirs is an old sound; a bit of Wipers, a bit of Gun Club. Dark, dusty and trance-inducing! LC001 (They will play at Funky's May 28)
A new raging trio around these parts is THE ORPHEANS with “Ellisons Tomb” b/w “Keep It Slow” Neptoon 012 The A-side features some wild Yardbirds/Beefheart damage that will see you throw a fit. And the flip is like a soul groove from 1966! This trio rocks it live, so catch them while you can.
Finally Jack Oblivian has his Tennessee Tearjerkers playing “Lone Ranger of Love” and The Mannequin Men play “Sally”. Both tracks are rocking modern garage with good production. (A promo from Vice records)
All these records have kind of a retro sound to them; it's groovy baby!
