Event Description

The Ministry of Casual Living and SOUND + FILM are excited to be hosting artist and musicians Jeffrey Ellom and Niloo Farahzadeh as artists in residence for the month of June. Celebrating the artistic process as the ultimate artistic outcome, both artists are committing themselves to a DIY endeavour for which they have little training.

Over the course of four weeks they will capture their explorations, and share the outcome in an immersive public installation. Stay tuned for sneak peeks of their process, and join us for the open studio and residency finale Saturday June 29, 7-9 pm!

About the artists:

Jeffrey Ellom is a settler of Ewe, Polish, and Irish ancestry who grew up on unceded Syilx Okanagan territory and has lived on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen speaking peoples since 2014. Through the media of music (released under the name ‘pesewa’), sculpture, and video, he works to narrate his experiences and cultural stories through an afrofuturist lens.

Niloo Farahzadeh (she//her) is a singer-songwriter, musician and illustrator based in Lekwungen Territory (Victoria, B.C.). Her multidisciplinary work explores ancestry, migration, and diasporic identity. Her musical project Niloo pays homage to her ancestry and personal history as a Iranian-Canadian woman; sonically hybridizing western dreampop, psych and shoegaze with pre-revolution 70’s Iranian pop to create a fuzzy, nostalgic fabric of sound. In a similar vein, her visual art leans vibrant, detailed and colourful: with subjects depicted in a pop-art style that borrows heavily from Persian miniature or Qajar-era artistic traditions.

The 2024 “SOUND + FILM” series is generously supported by the Victoria Music Strategy Grant, a fund that seeks to celebrate Victoria's musical talent while addressing some of the barriers and challenges faced by musicians in the city. We would also like to thank The Ministry of Casual Living for it’s continued support for our events. Stay tuned for more in 2024!

Film + Sound (temporarily renamed Sound + Film for current events ;) is a series of spontaneously programmed film and music nights that feature avant garde and experimental works by international and local directors, hidden gems from the archives, and live score by local musicians. It has been taking place since 2018 on the traditional territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) peoples.
