Dark Star
Is a folk rock jamband formed by singer/songwriter Douglas Kerr in Whistler British Colombia. In the summer of 1994 Douglas organized a group of musicians along with long time musical collaborator Todd Taylor from Vancouver to create some loose jams and celebrate the music of The Allman Brothers, Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, and other classic rock icons. It soon became a hard working folk rock jamband building a repertoire of original songs and playing frequent shows at the iconic Boot Pub in Whistler. The band entertained at festivals and venues across B.C. in the nineties and 2000's but more recently just do the occasional show. Dark Star released their first CD in 1998 “ The Smoke’s Gettin Thick” and followed up with their sophomore release in 2001, “Mountain Sites". Mountain sites contains ten diverse tracks and includes Juno award winners Jesse Zubot and Steve Dawson as guest musicians. “Well written music with a natural unforced flow combining the melodies and rhythms, Dark Star has strong songs that weave through many musical styles with well thought out lyrics and sung with a soulful raspy tone."(Pique Newsmagazine). Dark Star is working on a new album to follow up “Mountain Sites” that will again include some incredible musical talent. Some songs on the new album will be familiar to fans of Dark Star as the band has been performing them for years.
Todd Taylor is the lead guitar player for Dark Star and is well known in Vancouver for his stellar guitar solos. The powerhouse rhythm section is Geoff Hicks on Drums "One of the things about Geoff Hicks' drumming that has always impressed me, is that he really listens to the song and is sensitive to the dynamics and nuances that it requires at any given
moment." (Colin James). Darren Parris on Bass who's recording credits include Hedley, Marcy Playground, Zubot and Dawson and Danial Powter to name a few. This rhythm section is guaranteed to get the dance floor going. Jordan White of "She Stole my Beer" fame lights up the house on his Hammond B3 and keyboards. This is an all-star lineup of Vancouver musicians not to be missed.
